How to Import an Existing Resume to the AI Resume Builder?

This guide describes how you can import an existing resume (PDF, Doc, or Careerflow resumes) to your AI resume builder to tailor it to jobs.

Updated over a week ago

If you're looking to enhance your existing resume using Careerflow.ai's AI Resume Builder, importing your document is a simple process. Follow these steps to upload your resume whether it's in PDF, DOCX, or already created previously on Careerflow.

Step 1: Head to the AI Resume Builder

  • Access your Careerflow.ai account by logging in. If you don’t have an account, you’ll need to register first.

  • Head to the AI Resume Builder from the left menu option "Resume Builder" or click here.

Step 2: Create a New Resume

  • Click on the "Create New Resume" and choose the "Upload Resume" option.

Step 3: Select the file you want to use

You will now be presented with a popup to select resumes from your documents. Here, you can choose a file that you've already uploaded to your Careerflow portal, or choose "Upload New Resume" to upload a new document.

If choosing a document already on Careerflow

You simply need to choose the document from the list and click "Continue".

Resumes previously created with the Careerflow AI Resume Builder have the Careerflow icon next to them. PDF and Docx files will have the file extension listed.

If choosing a new file to upload

You will be presented with a file upload popup. Upload the file (only PDF and DOCX Supported), give it a title, and optionally add a description. Do not change the category from "Resume", or the file will not be visible in your resumes list.

When ready, click "Save Document" and then press "Continue" after selecting the required resume document from the list of documents.

Note: After you press "Continue", the system may take a few moments to parse the information from your uploaded document before proceeding further.

Step 4: Choose a Template for your Resume

Explore our variety of resume templates and select one that best fits your current application needs.

💡 Adjust Anytime: Remember, the template you choose isn't set in stone. You can come back and change the template or adjust the formatting at any point in the process of updating your resume. This flexibility ensures that your resume can evolve as your job search progresses or as you gather more insights about what works best in your industry.

Step 5: Add a Target Job Title and Description

Our AI Resume Builder helps you tailor your resume specifically to specific job opportunities. Hence, we ask you to submit a job title and description at the time of resume creation. This helps our AI learn what type of role you're looking for, and adjust any suggestions accordingly.

You can either manually add a Target Job Title and Job Description, or choose from a Job you've already imported into your Careerflow Job Tracker.

When done, click "Continue".

Step 6: Accept System Info (Final Step)

It's important to note that we use resume parsing software to extract key information from your resume (whether it's a PDF or a Word file) and reformat it into one of the selected templates with the pre-defined fields. This resume parsing software extracts information similarly to how Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) extract information from your resume as well. (In fact, many of the top ATS use the same parsing software!)

The impact of this on you could be that part of the information from your original resume may not appear exactly as-is on the Careerflow resume. It's your responsibility to go through the created Careerflow resume and make the necessary changes to ensure the data you need is present.

Finally, the good news is that you only need to do this once (or a few times at best), as going forward -- you'll always be using Careerflow's AI resume builder to maintain your resume versions and copies.

Final Output

Once you've completed all the steps above, you should see a screen with a resume score, skill score, and editor on the left half of your screen with a preview of your resume on the right half of the screen. You're now in the AI resume builder and can explore all of the advanced features and functionalities it has to offer!
